Average Bra Size in the US and UK, and Why It Misleads

There is no official average bra size. Often-quoted retailer and survey figures put it at around 34DD in the US and 36DD in the UK. Treat those as rough snapshots of what people buy, not what fits them, because many women wear the wrong size. Your own measurements are a far better guide.

Compare with

Cup volume against the average

−2 steps

Your 34C holds about 2 cup steps less than the often-quoted US average of 34DD. One step is about one cup size on the same band.

On a 34 band, the average's cup volume is a 34DD.

The averages are retailer and survey figures, not measurements of real bodies. The size that fits you is the one that matters.

Where the “average” numbers come from

No government or standards body measures bra size across a whole country. What gets reported as the average comes from two kinds of source: retailers counting what they sell, and surveys asking people what size they wear.

Both describe labels, not bodies. If a store stocks more of one size, it sells more of it. If a survey asks for the size on the tag, it records the tag, whether or not that bra fits. So the often-quoted figures of around 34DD in the US and 36DD in the UK are useful as a rough picture of the market. They are not a measurement of anyone.

What “average” looks like across sizing systems

The same size carries a different label in each country. Here are the two quoted averages written in four systems, with their sister sizes one band down and one band up. Every size in a row holds about the same cup volume.

UK average, sister down34DDD34E12E75F
UK average36DD36DD14DD80E
UK average, sister up38D38D16D85D

A few things follow from the table:

  • The two “averages” are one band apart but share a cup letter, so the UK figure holds a little more cup volume. A 36DD sits on the same sister line as a 34DDD.
  • In European sizing, neither average is a DD. They are 75E and 80E, because EU letters run in single steps after D.
  • A 34DDD in the US and a 34E in the UK are the same bra. The letter changes with the country, not with the body.

For any other size, the bra size chart does the same translation.

Why averages mislead

An average bra size sounds like a useful benchmark. In practice it hides more than it shows.

Many women wear the wrong size

Fitting surveys and retailers have long claimed that a large share of women wear the wrong bra size, with figures as high as 70 to 80 percent widely quoted. The exact number is hard to pin down, but the direction is consistent: the most common mistake is a band that is too big and a cup that is too small. An average built from those bras inherits the mistake.

The +4 rule shifts everything

An older fitting method added about 4 inches to the underbust to get the band. Modern guidance uses the snug underbust as it is. The difference is large. Take an underbust of 32 inches (81 cm) and a bust of 37 inches (94 cm):

MethodBandDifferenceSize
Snug underbust, no +4325 in32DD
Old +4 rule361 in36A

The sister of 32DD on a 36 band is a 36C, so the +4 result is two cups smaller in volume as well as four inches looser in the band. Averages gathered while that habit was common, or from people still sized that way, lean toward bigger bands and smaller cups than the bodies behind them.

A single number cannot describe a range

Bra sizes are two numbers, and both vary widely. An average band and an average cup do not even have to belong to the same people. Knowing the average tells you nothing about which of the many sizes around it is yours.

Average bra size in the UK

The figure quoted most often for the UK is 36DD. Like the US figure, it comes from retailer and survey data, not a national measurement.

Two UK details matter if you compare it with US numbers:

  • Bands match. A UK 36 is a US 36.
  • Cups match up to DD, then split. A UK E is a US DDD and a UK F is a US G. So a British woman wearing a 36E and an American woman wearing a 36DDD are wearing the same size. The UK to US bra size guide covers every step.

If you are in the UK and want your own size in UK letters, the UK bra size calculator works in centimeters or inches.

Average bra size by age

There is no reliable public data on average bra size by age, and figures that claim otherwise rarely say where they come from. What is well established is that size changes over a lifetime. Growth in the teens, weight change, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause can all move the band, the cup or both.

So rather than comparing with an age average, measure again when something changes, or every 6 to 12 months. If a breast changes suddenly in size, shape or feel, see a doctor.

Use your measurements, not the average

The average answers “what do people buy.” The calculator answers “what fits me.” It takes two minutes:

  1. Measure the snug underbust and the fullest part of the bust. The how to measure bra size guide shows where.
  2. Enter both in the calculator. It gives the band and cup in US, UK, AU, EU and FR.
  3. Try the result and check the band, cups, gore and straps. If the band is wrong but the cups are right, move one sister size.

Your size may land on the average, near it or nowhere close. All three are normal.

Questions

What is the average bra size for a woman?

No national body measures it. Figures often quoted by retailers and surveys put it around 34DD in the US and 36DD in the UK. These describe bras sold or reported, which is not the same as bras that fit.

What is the average bra size in the UK?

The figure most often quoted is 36DD. It comes from retailer and survey data rather than a national measurement, and in EU sizing it would be written 80E.

Is 34DD a big bra size?

Not especially. A 34DD means 5 inches between bust and band. It holds about the same cup volume as a 32DDD or a 36D, and it is the size most often quoted as the US average.

Has the average bra size gone up?

Surveys over the years have reported larger averages than in the past. Part of that is likely better fitting, with smaller bands and larger cups, rather than bodies alone changing.

Does bra size change with age?

It often does. Weight change, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause can all change band and cup. That is why fitting guides suggest measuring again every 6 to 12 months.
