Why “biggest” depends on the band
A cup letter is not a volume. It is a difference: the bust measurement minus the snug underbust, counted in inches. Each inch moves the letter one step along. A D is 4 inches, a DD is 5, and so on.
So the letter on its own tells you about proportion, not size. A 28G and a 40G both have 7 inches of difference, but the 40G cups are much larger, because they are cut to fit a much bigger frame. Asking for the biggest cup size without a band leaves out half the answer.
The useful questions are two:
- How far does the cup ladder go? That is the letter.
- How much does the bra actually hold? That is the letter and the band together.
The cup ladder in US, UK and EU, side by side
This is the full ladder our chart and calculator use, from 0 to 15 inches of difference. Read across a row to see the same cup written three ways. For every band in five systems, use the bra size chart above.
| Inches of difference | UK / AU | US | EU / FR |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | AA | AA | AA |
| 1 | A | A | A |
| 2 | B | B | B |
| 3 | C | C | C |
| 4 | D | D | D |
| 5 | DD | DD | E |
| 6 | E | DDD | F |
| 7 | F | G | G |
| 8 | FF | H | H |
| 9 | G | I | I |
| 10 | GG | J | J |
| 11 | H | K | K |
| 12 | HH | L | L |
| 13 | J | M | M |
| 14 | JJ | N | N |
| 15 | K | O | O |
Two things stand out. First, the same letter means different things by country. A UK G is 9 inches of difference, while a US or EU G is 7. Second, the UK reaches the top of the ladder with earlier letters, because it counts double letters such as FF and GG as full steps. A UK K and a US O are the same cup.
US labels above DDD are the least consistent. Some brands write DDDD or F where others write G, so past DDD the brand’s own chart beats any general rule. The bra cup size guide explains each letter in more detail.
Where mainstream ranges stop and specialist ranges start
Size ranges are a business decision, not a measurement standard. Many mainstream brands cover the middle of the ladder well and stop somewhere around a US DD, DDD or G. Above that, the choice narrows quickly in ordinary stores.
Specialist full-bust brands, many of them using UK letters, cover the upper rows of the table above and often smaller bands too. Some continue past K. Made-to-measure makers can go beyond any printed range.
So the honest answer to “what is the largest bra size” is: it depends on who makes it. If a size is hard to find, it usually means it sits outside mainstream ranges, not that it is rare or wrong.
The sister-size volume ladder: small band, big letter
Sister sizes hold about the same cup volume: one band down and one cup up, or the reverse. Follow that rule across several bands and you get the table below. Each row is one volume, written on bands 28 to 40, in US letters.
| Volume row | 28 | 30 | 32 | 34 | 36 | 38 | 40 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | DDD | DD | D | C | B | A | AA |
| 2 | G | DDD | DD | D | C | B | A |
| 3 | I | H | G | DDD | DD | D | C |
| 4 | J | I | H | G | DDD | DD | D |
Read row 2 from end to end. A 28G and a 40A hold roughly the same cup volume. That means a 28DD, two cups below the 28G, holds less than a 40A, even though DD sounds far bigger than A.
Long chains are an approximation. Wire width and cup shape change with the band, so a 28 band and a 40 band never feel like the same bra. The point stands, though: a big letter on a small band is not automatically a big bust. The sister sizes tool works out the neighbors for any size.
Is 34C big? Is 36DD big? A band-relative rule
When you want to know whether a size is “big,” check two things separately.
- Proportion: read the letter. Up to about 3 inches (C) is a smaller-to-moderate proportion. Around 4 to 6 inches (D to US DDD) is a fuller proportion. From 7 inches up (US G, UK F) is full.
- Volume: move it to a common band. Slide the size along its sister line to a 34 band and compare letters there. Two sizes with the same letter on the same band hold about the same.
Applied to the two sizes people ask about most:
- 34C is 3 inches of difference on a mid-range band. Moderate proportion, moderate volume, and below the average bra size. See 34C in every system.
- 36DD is 5 inches of difference. On a 34 band it becomes a 34DDD, so it is fuller than a 34C, but it is a common size, not an outlier. See 36DD in every system.
Neither is unusual. Neither label tells you anything about whether a bra fits, either. That is the job of the band, the cups and the four checks in how a bra should fit.
What to do with this
If you are near the top of the ladder or on a small band, measure first and let the calculator give you the size in your country’s letters. Then shop by the row in the table, not by the letter alone, and use bra size conversion when a brand labels in another system.
If a breast changes suddenly in size, shape or feel, see a doctor.
