A halter top fastens around the neck and leaves the shoulders bare, so ordinary bra straps show. The answer depends on two things: whether the back is closed or open, and how much support you need.
Start with the back of the top
Closed back. The top covers the area where a bra band sits. You can wear a bra with a full band, which is the most supportive option. Only the straps need to change.
Open back. The top is cut away at the back, so a band would show. The support has to come from adhesive cups, body tape, or cups built into the top.

Closed-back halter: three options
- Multiway bra with halter straps. Detach the straps and reattach them so they loop around the back of your neck. This keeps a full band and underwire, so it is the strongest choice and the best one for fuller busts.
- Strapless bra. Better when the top’s own neck straps sit wide or are thin, because halter bra straps would peek out beside them. Choose a firm band, side boning and silicone grip along the top and bottom edges.
- Adhesive cups. Best for thin, clingy fabric where even a band line would show through, and for smaller busts.
Open-back halter: what still works
- Adhesive cups stick directly to the skin and leave the back clear. They give shape and light support.
- Body tape lifts and holds from underneath and can give more lift than adhesive cups, but takes practice to apply.
- Sewn-in cups. Many halter tops have a lining where cups can be stitched in. This often gives the cleanest look.
For tops cut very low at the back, see what to wear with a backless dress: the same options apply.
Choosing by bust size
| Bust | Closed back | Open back |
|---|---|---|
| A–B cups | Adhesive cups or a light strapless bra | Adhesive cups |
| C–D cups | Multiway bra in halter mode, or strapless | Adhesive cups or body tape |
| DD and up | Multiway bra in halter mode, or a firm longline strapless | Body tape or cups sewn into the top |
Sizing a strapless or multiway bra for a halter
A bra worn halter-style or strapless gets almost all of its support from the band, so the band has to be firm. Many people go down one band and up one cup, the sister size, for strapless wear: a 36C becomes a 34D. The strapless bra guide has a picker that does this for you.
Halter straps also put weight on the back of the neck. If that aches after a few hours, the band is too loose and the straps are carrying the bust. Tighten the band before shortening the straps.
Small things that show
- Clear straps catch light and flash. A strapless bra is usually less visible.
- Color. Under a light top, match your skin tone, not the color of the top. See what bra to wear under a white shirt.
- The neckline. A halter that dips low at the front needs a plunge-shaped bra or adhesive cups, because a standard center will show.
